The Municipal Service of Archaeology and Ethnography is the department responsible for the supervision and/or development of archaeological investigations that are carried out in the municipal area in accordance with article 58.6 of the Valencian Cultural Heritage law 4/1998.

The extraordinary richness of the archaeological and ethnographic heritage of Villajoyosa is reflected in its important historic position as the capital of the Marina Baja region and in its role as an important maritime port linked to the navigation routes used by the Phoenicians-Carthaginians, Greeks, and Romans and during the Early Medieval and Modern periods. This is supported by the large number and high quality of the imported objects found in the field investigations. Since 1996 the Municipal Service has managed and supervised the field investigations, the laboratory and the Municipal Museum as well as organising a number of important events to promote its heritage, such as the five Conferences in Archaeology and Ethnography, held up to now, the exhibition "Saint Martha: Five centuries of History of Vila Joiosa (2003) and the International congress on Saint Martha (2003), etc...
