Un segle d’escola (A Century of Schooling in Villajoyosa)
1st October to 19th December 2008. The Old Ermita School

In 1908 the first school in Villajoyosa was founded in the Ermita of San Antonio. This was only made possible due to the determination of Doctor Álvaro Esquerdo, who held a deep concern for the educational well being of the local children in his home town of Villajoyosa, and especially those from the local area in which he was born. His friend, another locally born man, Juan Bautista Samper, donated the land where the school was built. One hundred years later, Villajoyosa Council’s Department of Education has organised a programme of events to mark this centenary. Throughout 2008 a series of investigative works have been undertaken by the Ermita School Centenary Commission and by the Municipal Museum. The results of these will be made available in a publication to be launched on October 17th and displayed in this exhibition. A Century of Schooling in Villajoyosa" is a journey through the history of this school and of the children who attended it. The exhibition displays a recreation of a schoolroom from the beginning of the 20th century, including the sewing corner where the children learnt how to sew. A number of traditional games such as hoops, the diabolo and stilts, and toys including marbles, collector cards, a doll and a tricycle are part of the exhibition. In addition, childrens’ costume and objects associated with the first communion are also on display. The exhibition is held in what was the girls’ classroom of the old school. The Council’s Department of Technical Services and the Museum’s staff, under the supervision of the Municipal Museum’s conservator, Maria José Velázquez, have undertaken the work of restoring and renovating the classroom. By revealing the original floors and plaster walls and dado the classroom has been returned to its original condition. Credits
