THE GREEKS
Title: Sacrificial Crater. We have very little evidence of any remains in Villajoyosa before the period of colonisation (8th – 5th centuries B.C.). Alonis (the ancient name for Villajoyosa) is referred to by some classical writers as a Greek colony, but it is more likely that it was a trader’s district within the Iberian town. This display case exhibits a selection of high quality Greek artefacts that have come from the Iberian cemeteries in Vila Joiosa. The highlights are two black-figured cups from the Haimonian workshop and a sacrificial red-figured Crater.
PHOENICIANS AND CARTHAGINIANS
Title: Egyptian Amulet. A number of Phoenician finds, including high quality items, have been found in the last few years in the Iberian cemeteries in Villajoyosa as well as a number of artefacts which were brought here by Phoenician traders from other areas of the Mediterranean such as Egypt. In the display case a number of important artefacts are displayed and amongst these: a bronze incense burner; Phoenician pottery; Punic perfume bottles made of coloured glass paste; an Egyptian New Year flask made of faience with hieroglyphic inscriptions and Egyptian soapstone necklaces with figurines of Egyptian gods are of special interest.
Hands-on Model: THE ORIENTALIZING NECKLACE OF POBLE NOU
Title: Model of the Necklace. In the museum there are various models accessible to people with disabilities; hands-on displays, with audio in three languages (Valencian, Castilian and English) and with Braille signs. This model is a reproduction of the 6th century B.C. Poble Nou Necklace, with the gold pendants enlarged ten times. This necklace is one of the most outstanding Phoenician gold jewels in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula and it is composed of a number of different protecting symbols such as the eye of Udyat of Horus or the sun and the moon.
ORIENTALIZING JEWELLERY
Title: The Poble Nou Necklace. In this display case a number of Phoenician "Orientalizing style" necklaces, ear rings, rings and pendants are exhibited. The original necklaces are exhibited during certain times of the year with special security measures in place, and during the rest of the year they are substituted by a hologram ( a real size 3D photograph) of the Poble Nou Necklace.
