FAMILY WORKSHOP “I AM A ROMAN”

This workshop was opened on 18th May 2006 to coincide with the International Museums Day.

This is a family workshop aimed at children from 6 to 11 years, but with adult supervision who have to actively participate.   The workshop, which lasts for about an hour, is carried out without any staff using a worksheet and materials provided by the museum concierge.

In this workshop, children, dressed up as Romans, in clothes available in the "kids’ corner" will discover how Roman children lived 2000 years ago.  The children move around the workshop area with their families playing and solving problems using clues which are provided.  During the games they will learn about such things as lockets, baby feeders, rattles, quills to write on wax tablets, brooches, inscriptions, dolls, miniature toy pots and children’s games, which have all been found in graves from the Roman cemeteries in Villajoyosa.

Whilst learning, the children can play with games identical to the ones that can be seen in the museum’s display cases.  Reproductions of the game boards and pieces are available for such games as latrunculi (the mercenary game which was the most popular Roman game), calculi, tali (knucklebones) and even more ancient games such as the Greek game petteia.  They will be able to write their names using reproduction Roman quills and clay tablets, which were found in Pompey,  make their own "bulla" (Roman children’s locket or charm),  try Roman perfumes made of oils bottled in reproduction perfume bottles found in Villajoyosa or even discover and create some Roman inventions such as the famous Roman arch.

The workshop is carried out in the kids' corner, a space reserved for children in the museum’s archaeological hall, where they can paint or do other crafts.

During May and June a trial run of the workshop will be carried out in Spanish but, from July onwards all printed materials will be available in Valencian, Spanish and English. The educational worksheet (in a PDF file) will also be available from this museum’s website.

Children who complete the worksheet correctly will be entered into a 3 monthly draw to win a prize from the museum.
